Rievaulx Abbey
A pleasure of a commission, this is one of a set of three miniatures of Yorkshire abbeys.
The many buildings on the site of Rievaulx Abbey make it a complex one to paint; so many magnificent angles to choose from. To offset the striated nature of this view, I painted deep shadows on the lawn from strong evening sun, and broke up the band of the sky with defined cumulus clouds. Tricky, when on my visit it was an overcast day in November! It was quite the mental exercise to re-engineer the lighting, but very satisfying to bring a glow to the creamy Yorkshire limestone.
