A whim made out of wood, this piece has lived in my mind for a long time; it was inspired by the romance of a Venetian building, combined with the portal-like potential of miniatures. 

 

I wasn't sure if I would be capable of carving at such a small scale, and just followed my hands until the design refined itself down. The painting behind leads the viewer out to the horizon; watching for something, or someone, to return.
