Whitby Abbey

A pleasure of a commission, this is one of a set of three miniatures of Yorkshire abbeys.

 

Whitby Abbey looks magnificent from several angles, but from the top of the 19th century West Pier Lighthouse you can see both the dramatic silhouette, and the delicate apertures of its Rose Window. I loved building up the stonework and ‘knitting in’ the textures of stone and cliff that 700 years of sea winds have carved out.
