Blueprints II: Byland Abbey
The magnificent West Front of Byland Abbey in Yorkshire; the half-moon of its huge rose window used to be filled with a delicate tracery of stone finials and glass, but the remaining dish of its stone rim is just as impressive, and does a good job of showing how monumental these abbeys were.
This miniature really challenged me; I went though a few sheets of 23ct gold leaf trying to get it right! This is the second in my ‘Blueprints’ series, the first being of Howden Minster.
